Next Steps of East Cooper (NSEC)—Volunteers Needed

Next Steps of East Cooper (NSEC) is a 100%-Volunteer based, Christ-centered, mentoring ministry. It promotes change, dignity, and self-reliance for our neighbors living in emotional, physical, and/or spiritual poverty. It also shares the Good News of Jesus Christ through prayer and action.  The Next Step Program is a “hand-up” program; not a “hand-out” program.  Please visit our website www.NextStepsSC.org.

We refer to the neighbors we help in NSEC as “participants” because they are actively participating in their recovery from poverty.  Most live in Awendaw, Mt Pleasant, Sullivan’s Island, Isle of Palms, and/or Daniel Island; but some may live in Hanahan, North Charleston and/or West Ashley.

We ask you to help us recruit volunteers to serve as NSEC mentors as well as in other NSEC volunteer positions.  We train volunteers to guide participants in setting personal, life-improving goals; and in encouraging them to achieve each goal, one step at a time.  NSEC mentors do this by providing participants needed information, referrals, and friendship, e.g., the assurance that someone cares about them and will be there for them, every step along the way, to an improved life.

Our vision is: “Transforming lives through Jesus Christ one conversation at a time.” By meeting in conversation with participants each week, mentors help them make positive changes in their lives: (a) emotionally by listening to their hopes and fears, (b) physically by linking them to employment and social resources, and (c) spiritually by sharing with them the Good News of Jesus Christ.

NSEC operates at two East Cooper locations:

  • On Tuesdays from 10 AM to 2 PM in the Christ Church Parish Hall Building at 2304 Highway 17N, Mt Pleasant, SC 29466
  • On Fridays from 3-7 PM in the St. Andrew’s Ministry Center at 440 Whilden Street, Mt. Pleasant, SC 29464

We offer volunteer training classes each month at St. James Anglican Church, 1872 Camp Road, James Island, SC 29412.  Please see the training fact sheet for details.  For information, please contact Deacon Ed Dyckman at 843-367-5647 or dyckman.edward@gmail.com. NSEC is an affiliate of Next Steps of South Carolina.
